  • Long Beach High School Hockey

    Long Beach High School Hockey

Long Beach Prep High School Hockey is a team made up of high school students who play  hockey. There is a JV and varsity team. In spring they play under the LA Kings and in the summer they play under the Anaheim Ducks.

Hockey is starting to be a popular sport in Long Beach. Long Beach Prep gives high school students who play hockey  a chance to play other cities and represent Long Beach. Some of the other cities they play include El Segundo, Venice, Redondo Beach and Wiseburn.

The coaches are Adam Stanovich, Austin Stanovich , and Matthew Dove. They teach hockey players new skills and help them become better players overall. The coaches have a passion for the sport and prepare players to play at a higher level. When asked what his thoughts were on the coaches, forward Josh Ribeiro said, “They know what they’re talking about.” The coaches are very experienced. When asked how do you feel about playing on Long Beach Prep defender Adin Keiter said, “I’ve been on the team for two years now (four seasons), and I feel that I’ve been able to develop my skill on a team that’s suitable for my skill level. When I started, I was only playing hockey for a couple months, so LB has been about 80% of my career.”

Keiter also has a passion for the sport like many of the players on the team. Former JV goalie Steven Fitzer  said he “likes the fun environment and the competitiveness” of playing on Long Beach Prep. Fitzer also said, “I love the pressure and the non stop action” of being goalie. Many players say Long Beach Prep Hockey is like a family.

The Hockey players are not only athletes, but scholars and many of them want to achieve a higher education and play in college. When asked how does it feel to be a part of Long Prep, forward Natalie Compton said,  “I feel like I am a part of a family and I get to hang out with people from other schools so it’s cool. It’s more of a normal high school experience than my school is so I think I need the experiences that come with being on the team.”

Long Beach Prep is like one big family and a great part of the Long Beach community. It is also a great team to just watch. Long Beach Prep always appreciates if anyone comes out and supports the team in their upcoming summer season. So come out and support Long Beach high school hockey.

  • Modern Feminism is Overrated

Okay, so before people start chasing me with pitchforks and sticks of fire, let’s set something straight: I am not an anti-feminist and I don’t hate women; I love women and love being a woman. I am very much for women’s rights. People assume that every woman needs to be a feminist, and that those who aren’t feminists are sexist, but that’s just not true.

Take a look at modern day American feminism. What real difference, as a group have they accomplished? I do thank the original feminists, like Jane Austen, who through her novels expressed that women were more than objects for men to own, that women could do more that what society expected.  They could read, they could be independent, they can say ‘no’ to a man they didn’t want to marry. And Lucille Ball, who was the first true female comedian. She was shown, not as a side character, but as a goofy leading woman (who was also the first woman to wear pants on national television).

However, I don’t see women like that anymore, and nowadays feminism is a joke. I agree that there is still so much to be done for women, but are third-wave feminist really doing the job? First-wave feminism began in the 19th century and focused on women’s suffrage, giving women the right to vote. Well, white women, anyway. It involved women speaking without being spoken to and having their own opinions (how scandalous!).
Second-wave feminism started up in the mid 60’s until the 80’s and had a main focus on the freedom of sexuality. Women began to dress differently, wore bolder looking makeup, and most memorably fought for and gained abortion rights. Woman forced their way into the workforce on their way to equality and gaining respect as more than just housewives. Inspired by the Black Power Movement, women began women-only meetings. Well, rich, white women anyway. Several accounts at the time from women of color refer to them attempting to join these meetings, only to be turned away due to their race and financial situation.

So this brings us to today’s third-wave feminism, which is about what? Slut-shaming? Fat-shaming? #freethenipple? It’s so unorganized and so unfocused, I don’t even think feminists know what they’re fighting for. I understand that not all feminists think this way, but a big majority do. I just don’t want to be associated with a group that is so self-centered and hypocritical. At the Women’s March, the one that was supposed to be so revolutionary, a large number of women were not allowed to march. Their entry was denied because they are pro-life.

“Although organizers say anti-abortion women are welcome to attend the Women’s March, their inclusion in what the event represents could become more complicated if the platform laid out by the organizers is a sign of the feminist movement in the Trump era… that feminism is a political term and that the idea that women should be able to choose what they do with their bodies is fundamental to feminism,” stated Elizabeth Velez, professor of Women and Gender Studies at Georgetown University, to The Washington Post.

So women should have the freedom to say what they believe in, but only if they agree with you? This isn’t feminism, this isn’t equality. Third-wave feminism isn’t the way. We can’t find peace if there isn’t true unity between all women. I agree that America isn’t perfect, but it’s a whole lot better than other countries. While women are fighting and getting killed for the right to read, we’re here, protesting magazines for having skinny models.

I agree with modern feminism, just not the plan of action, or lack thereof. If we really want equality, peace, and unity, we have to accomplish it together, as a sisterhood, across the nation and the world.

  • Baseball Takes Tough Loss

Poly baseball played an away tournament March 3 hosted by Los Alamitos. They lost 8-7, but it was an overall good game.
Junior Mike Mauai was selected Player of the Game. When asked about his thoughts on the game, junior outfielder Nolan Brown said, “It’s a good game to see where we are as a team.”
Players were prepared for the game but did not come out with the win. Junior center fielder EJ Andrews said he prepared for the game by, “taking practice very seriously, working on my defense, and hitting.”
The coach was preparing the team by working a lot on defense.
Brown said coach was preparing them by “working on a lot of drills, and defense. Defense has been a big emphasis throughout the season.”
Their defensive practice is showing in the games but their offense is not quite good enough.
Andrews’ thoughts on the coach are that “he brings a lot of enthusiasm to the sport, he gets us pumped up for the game. His favorite saying is ‘practice makes perfect.’”
All of the players practice every day. Senior catcher AJ Renteria said he prepares for games by “hitting every day, working out everyday, practicing hard everyday, [and] no days off.”
The Poly Jackrabbits also played a home neutral tournament game against the Loara Saxons. Unfortunately, the Jackrabbits lost by a score of 2-1, but their good defense showed. Senior Jake Creamer was selected Player of the Game. The Jackrabbits have only played a few games, and now hold a 2-2 record. Poly is now third in the Moore League.

  • Softball

The girls varsity softball team will start their season in a tournament on February 25, which is this coming Saturday at Katella High School in Anaheim. “The girls have been practicing hard to prepare for the upcoming tournament,” said senior and three-year varsity player Jacyln Pangelinan. Girls varsity softball coach Kenith Munger has been coaching for many years, and knows the game very well. He hopes to lead the team to a Moore League title.

The team has a chance with the new additions to the team who came from the Junior Varsity team. First baseman and two-year varsity player Madison Demos said, “I can’t wait to get back between the lines and play.”

  • JJ’s Jam of the month: “Yes. I’m Ready”- Barbara Mason

Not everyone has been in love, but at one point, we’ve all wanted to be. People of all ages find themselves wanting someone to spend every moment with. More than a want, but a need for love. We all need love. This song expresses the stage of being ready for a relationship. Whether it’s your first relationship or your millionth, new love can be so difficult. It’s hard to start over, to trust and be vulnerable to a new person. It can take a whole lifetime to find the right person or it can take no time at all, but when you do decide to take that first step, it’s the most beautiful and terrifying thing. The good thing is, from that point on, it gets easier, or so they tell me.

  • AP survival Guide

AP study tips and stress relievers

    1. Eliminate factors such as watching TV and cell phones; it can speed up the studying process and help retain more information.

    2. Students who are taking multiple APs find it difficult choosing which to study for. In this situation, it helps to take one subject at a time. Studying for one exam one day and another the next day can relieve some of the stress that’s been built up. When focusing on a subject, spend at least 40 minutes to an hour reviewing notes, going over old homework problems, and reading AP practice study guides. Take a ten minute break, then review the subject once again.

    3. While studying, flashcards are your best friend!

    4. Stay organized. Do you expect to be relaxed if you have old papers and materials cluttering your desk? Start by outlining or creating a checklist for the items you want to accomplish. Then, organize your work space, removing all unneeded papers. Cleaning up the mess will make you question why you were lazy in the first place.

    5. As crazy as this may sound, study, but don’t over study to the point where your brain just ends up fried. Studying too much can become counterproductive. If you feel like you need a break, by all means, take it.

What to expect on the day  of your AP
AP Exams take place between Monday, May 2 and Friday, May 13. Check the apstudent.collegeboard.org site and the AP Calendar to find out when your exams are. Unless you are taking a small AP, you will take your exams at Grace Brethren Church (3590 Elm Ave, Long Beach, CA 90807). Students can consult the Advanced Placement link under the Academics tab on Schoolloop for verification on testing location. A map of Grace Brethren and instructions on where to go are on the website. Students can also arrive at the courtyard of the church to wait for instructions; the exams will be held in the Social Hall a Recreation Center.
Students should arrive between 7:15 A.M. and 7:30 A.M. for morning APs and by 11:30 A.M. for afternoon APs. If a student is taking the bus to the Church, they should wait on Atlantic Avenue by the front entrance and the bus should arrive by 6:50 A.M. and will leave around 7:10 A.M. for the morning exams; for afternoon exams, the bus will arrive around 11:05 A.M. and leave by 11:20 A.M. I would suggest leaving yourself plenty of time to get to Poly or Grace Brethren.
If you signed up for a school lunch, details are still being worked out. If you are taking a morning AP, pick up your lunch from the cafeteria and eat when you get back to Poly. If you are taking an afternoon exam, then pick up your lunch before boarding the bus, and if you have two exams that day, pick up your lunch before you leave in the morning. These plans could change, so keep an eye out for an email from Sam Koshy regarding the lunches.
When you arrive at the Church, you will check in at a table where you will need to present your ID. You will be given a card with your room and seat assignment. Pay attention upper-classmen! That is a new procedure. Students can then go to their assigned seat, unless they have a backpack. If you brought a backpack, you need to leave it at the allocated area. Students can keep water and snacks, but out of their backpack.

    What to bring

Several No. 2 wooden pencils with erasers

Pens, black or dark blue ink only

A watch with no alarm; a clock will be present, but students are responsible for keeping track of time.

Valid photo ID (School ID or driver’s license) with one bar-coded sticker from the AP student pack placed on the back of ID.

    Snacks and water

    What not to bring

CELL PHONES- leave them at home or in the car. If you bring them, they will need to be turned off and in your checked in backpack. If a student is caught with a cell phone, it will be confiscated and the student will be kicked out of the room. If a cell phone goes off or is being used, everyone’s scores are at risk of being thrown out and Poly can get into huge trouble, so DO NOT bring it.

Any other electronic besides a calculator (for required APs) and a watch.

Clothing with graphics related to the exam subject.

    Other healthy snacks we recommend:

    Apple slices

    Bananas

    Granola bars

    Blueberries

    Lots of water

  • Rabbits Stay On Track Of Winning

On Saturday April 16, the Long Beach Poly Trackrabbits competed in the traditional Mt. SAC Relays. This year, the invitational was held at Cerritos College. Everyone had come with the goal to win.
Once again, sophomore Ariyonna Augustine ran in the 100 meter dash, placing third overall, with a time of 12.83 seconds. Also, juniors Melissa Tanaka and Danielle Scott ran the 800 meters; Tanaka finished third in 2:13.17 minutes and Scott took eighth with 2:15.95 minutes.
The girl Trackrabbits also placed second in the sprint medley run with 4:01.90 minutes, which consists of two people each running a 200 meter dash, one person running a 400 meter dash, and the anchor running an 800 meter.
Another great performance came from junior Zion Bowens, who ran the men’s 200 meter dash. Bowens placed third overall in 21.76 seconds. Anthony Johnson placed first in the men’s 110 hurdles, with making his personal record with 14.68 seconds. “I have been setting a new record the past few meets,” said Johnson. “I am looking forward to doing even better and making it to state, and winning.”
Last Saturday, April 23, Long Beach Poly competed in the Orange County Meet of Champions at University High School in Irvine.
Senior Jaivion Cardinal ran in the open 300 meter hurdles last weekend, winning first place for Poly in 41.42 seconds. Again, Johnson ran the 110 hurdles, this time placing second overall in 14.69 seconds. Another Poly Trackrabbit, senior Jordan Peacock, ran the open 1600 meter, nabbing first plac, in 4:27 minutes.
Junior Briana Olebode ran both the women’s 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles last Saturday. Olebode took sixth in 100 hurdles with 18.20 seconds, and second place in the 300 hurdles with 49.29 seconds.
“I wasn’t necessarily nervous to run on Saturday, physically, but more so mentally,” said Olebode. “When I’m in the blocks waiting for the gun to go off, everything is zoned out. I don’t here anyone until that gun goes off.”
Senior Madi Brown ran in the open 400 meter dash in 1:04.43 minutes. Two of Poly’s seniors, Lauryn Jones and Mandy Wainfan, raced in the 800 meters. Jones took fourth in 2:31.72 minutes and Wainfan placed fifth in 2:35.52 minutes.

  • Six Weeks of Work Put to the Test

On Saturday, March 12, Poly students competed at the Los Angeles Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, placing thirty-seventh out of 66 teams. As part of the Momentum Robotics team, a team based at Sato Academy that represents all of Long Beach, team members put the robot they had spent six weeks constructing to the test. The robots played a game called Stronghold, in which they try to place foam balls in the other team’s goal or cross the other team’s defenses like moats and portcullis. The robots shoot balls, climb towers, and do a variety of tasks.
The Momentum Robotics team’s robot is named Charles II, and he is the successor to Charlie, a robot built by the old Poly Robotics team. Charles II can be controlled by a human or control himself autonomously.
Each member of the team put in at least one hundred hours constructing him. They measured, cut, and drilled metal components, put together a wiring and controller system, and even wrote letters to potential sponsors for funding. During the six-week season, they met for fourteen hours a week, sacrificing much of their lives for their robot. But despite the grueling hours, most Robotics team members are glad to have participated.
“This is a valuable experience for anyone, regardless of who they are or what they want to do,” said senior Kieran Reiser. “It’s a team effort that requires many skills and talents, one I’m happy to say I was a part of.”
After spending more than a month building, the team finally showed off their robot at the competition. Charles II won three matches, lost four, and tied one. The team is hopeful that they will do even better at their next competition in Orange County.
