  • 75th Annual Golden Globes

The new year kicked off on January 7th with the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards at 5 pm EST.  presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, several actors, productions, and series were awarded for their excellence and achievements in film and television.

The Golden Globe Awards are known for their silver tongued speakers and announcers that use their voices to speak out about issues that are socially significant and detrimental to certain communities. This year the “Times Up!” “Why We Wear Black” and “#Me Too” movement were big hits for several celebrities campaigns. Laura Dern, America Ferrera, Debra Messing, Emma Watson, Millie Bobby Brown, Shailene Woodley, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Oprah to name a few.

But the biggest statements of the night were that of the fashion statements. A large majority of the celebrities who attended wore black to symbolize their fight for a life free of sexual abuse and sexism in the entertainment industry. Natalie Portman notoriously spoke about the lack of female director recognition in the movie industry and said, “And here, are the all male nominees” as she announced the award for Best Director.

Oprah Winfrey was the first African American female to accept the Cecil B. Demille Golden Globe in recognition of her many accomplishments meanwhile eloquently speaking during the night that was already rife with politics.

To close her speech, Oprah hinted at the audience about a possible run for the presidential candidacy, perhaps in 2020. In addition to a bold dress code that celebrities followed, many brought outspoken dates who, just by their attendance, spoke volumes.

A disappointing aspect of the entire award show was the lack of solidarity in protest from the male population of nominees. But sometimes, men must use the platform and privilege they are given to be able to actually be heard and make a difference.

“Practice makes permanent, it does not make perfect because no one is perfect.” stated Gabriel Vasquez a freshman most likely known as “Gvaq” (pronounced “Gvac”) a cross country athlete.

The nickname “-Vaq” comes a long way, from a talented poly student named Christian Vasquez who was a great varsity cross country track runner being called “Cvaq”, even his older brother Jose was called “Jvaq” also a talented Poly student athlete, and since he is the youngest sibling he proudly takes the name too.

“I’ve embedded working out at a young age to always practice because I know that in the future I will be doing the exact same thing, I need to hold myself accountable wherever I am, wither be at home school or even just waiting for bus because practice make permanent,” stated Gvaq.

So put all your effort in now and before you know it you will go from being an intern to an employee.

  • METS Student Isaac Covarrubias Wins Logo Contest

METS Student Isaac Covarrubias Wins Logo Contest

METS recently changed their name to Poly Arts, also known as PARTS. To go with their new name, a contest was held to design the new logo. The assistant principal Stacie Alexander said, “A reason why we decided to change the name and have a logo contest was because the teachers and students are not really connected. They just feel like they’re assigned in there and we want them to become connected and feel like more of a family.” She also stated, “When I was in a meeting I asked the teachers if they felt they were connected to their pathway and they said, ‘no,’ and the teachers came up with the idea of changing the name to better fit what classes we offer and to have the students come up with the logo so they could be part of the process of becoming better connected to everyone in their pathway.”

The logo contest started a couple months ago and ended about a few weeks ago. There was voting online at Back to School Night and voting here at school. Two people submitted their artworks and the winner has been picked.

The winner of the contest is sophomore Isaac Covarrubias. Covarrubias stated, “I saw it on Schoolloop and I had some spare time so I decided to enter the contest.” He said that just the drawing itself took 10 to 15 minutes because at first they didn’t ask for the drawing to be colored. Later he colored it and made small alterations. The artwork will be shown online and T-shirts will be made.

Covarrubias stated, “My mom saw my artwork and she helped me and gave me advice on what I should fix.” Poly teacher Erica Sands will be awarding Covarrubias with a prize, though he doesn’t yet know what.

  • Modern Feminism is Overrated

Okay, so before people start chasing me with pitchforks and sticks of fire, let’s set something straight: I am not an anti-feminist and I don’t hate women; I love women and love being a woman. I am very much for women’s rights. People assume that every woman needs to be a feminist, and that those who aren’t feminists are sexist, but that’s just not true.

Take a look at modern day American feminism. What real difference, as a group have they accomplished? I do thank the original feminists, like Jane Austen, who through her novels expressed that women were more than objects for men to own, that women could do more that what society expected.  They could read, they could be independent, they can say ‘no’ to a man they didn’t want to marry. And Lucille Ball, who was the first true female comedian. She was shown, not as a side character, but as a goofy leading woman (who was also the first woman to wear pants on national television).

However, I don’t see women like that anymore, and nowadays feminism is a joke. I agree that there is still so much to be done for women, but are third-wave feminist really doing the job? First-wave feminism began in the 19th century and focused on women’s suffrage, giving women the right to vote. Well, white women, anyway. It involved women speaking without being spoken to and having their own opinions (how scandalous!).
Second-wave feminism started up in the mid 60’s until the 80’s and had a main focus on the freedom of sexuality. Women began to dress differently, wore bolder looking makeup, and most memorably fought for and gained abortion rights. Woman forced their way into the workforce on their way to equality and gaining respect as more than just housewives. Inspired by the Black Power Movement, women began women-only meetings. Well, rich, white women anyway. Several accounts at the time from women of color refer to them attempting to join these meetings, only to be turned away due to their race and financial situation.

So this brings us to today’s third-wave feminism, which is about what? Slut-shaming? Fat-shaming? #freethenipple? It’s so unorganized and so unfocused, I don’t even think feminists know what they’re fighting for. I understand that not all feminists think this way, but a big majority do. I just don’t want to be associated with a group that is so self-centered and hypocritical. At the Women’s March, the one that was supposed to be so revolutionary, a large number of women were not allowed to march. Their entry was denied because they are pro-life.

“Although organizers say anti-abortion women are welcome to attend the Women’s March, their inclusion in what the event represents could become more complicated if the platform laid out by the organizers is a sign of the feminist movement in the Trump era… that feminism is a political term and that the idea that women should be able to choose what they do with their bodies is fundamental to feminism,” stated Elizabeth Velez, professor of Women and Gender Studies at Georgetown University, to The Washington Post.

So women should have the freedom to say what they believe in, but only if they agree with you? This isn’t feminism, this isn’t equality. Third-wave feminism isn’t the way. We can’t find peace if there isn’t true unity between all women. I agree that America isn’t perfect, but it’s a whole lot better than other countries. While women are fighting and getting killed for the right to read, we’re here, protesting magazines for having skinny models.

I agree with modern feminism, just not the plan of action, or lack thereof. If we really want equality, peace, and unity, we have to accomplish it together, as a sisterhood, across the nation and the world.

  • Baseball Takes Tough Loss

Poly baseball played an away tournament March 3 hosted by Los Alamitos. They lost 8-7, but it was an overall good game.
Junior Mike Mauai was selected Player of the Game. When asked about his thoughts on the game, junior outfielder Nolan Brown said, “It’s a good game to see where we are as a team.”
Players were prepared for the game but did not come out with the win. Junior center fielder EJ Andrews said he prepared for the game by, “taking practice very seriously, working on my defense, and hitting.”
The coach was preparing the team by working a lot on defense.
Brown said coach was preparing them by “working on a lot of drills, and defense. Defense has been a big emphasis throughout the season.”
Their defensive practice is showing in the games but their offense is not quite good enough.
Andrews’ thoughts on the coach are that “he brings a lot of enthusiasm to the sport, he gets us pumped up for the game. His favorite saying is ‘practice makes perfect.’”
All of the players practice every day. Senior catcher AJ Renteria said he prepares for games by “hitting every day, working out everyday, practicing hard everyday, [and] no days off.”
The Poly Jackrabbits also played a home neutral tournament game against the Loara Saxons. Unfortunately, the Jackrabbits lost by a score of 2-1, but their good defense showed. Senior Jake Creamer was selected Player of the Game. The Jackrabbits have only played a few games, and now hold a 2-2 record. Poly is now third in the Moore League.

  • Softball

The girls varsity softball team will start their season in a tournament on February 25, which is this coming Saturday at Katella High School in Anaheim. “The girls have been practicing hard to prepare for the upcoming tournament,” said senior and three-year varsity player Jacyln Pangelinan. Girls varsity softball coach Kenith Munger has been coaching for many years, and knows the game very well. He hopes to lead the team to a Moore League title.

The team has a chance with the new additions to the team who came from the Junior Varsity team. First baseman and two-year varsity player Madison Demos said, “I can’t wait to get back between the lines and play.”

  • JJ’s Jam of the month: “Yes. I’m Ready”- Barbara Mason

Not everyone has been in love, but at one point, we’ve all wanted to be. People of all ages find themselves wanting someone to spend every moment with. More than a want, but a need for love. We all need love. This song expresses the stage of being ready for a relationship. Whether it’s your first relationship or your millionth, new love can be so difficult. It’s hard to start over, to trust and be vulnerable to a new person. It can take a whole lifetime to find the right person or it can take no time at all, but when you do decide to take that first step, it’s the most beautiful and terrifying thing. The good thing is, from that point on, it gets easier, or so they tell me.
