  • Poly Jackrabbits Pin Down The Victory

On January 10, boys varsity wrestling took on Lakewood in the Big Gym at Poly, and it was provided high energy entertainment for those that came to watch.

Twelve exhilarating matches took place from weight groups 106 pounds to 235 pounds. Poly took the dub winning 8 out of 11 matches played against the fierce Lakewood Lancers. The majority of the matches were won by pins rather than points which just goes to shows how hungry varsity boys wrestling wanted the victory.

Each match was filled with a fluctuating amount of emotions especially sophomore wrestler Zong Lo’s match. Weighing in at 152 pounds Zong showed some struggle closing in the match, but nonetheless Zong won by pinning his opponent. Zong, just a sophomore, wrestling at varsity states, “I felt nervous,” but since he had his team cheering him on, “I had courage!”

Zong’s senior brother Chang Lo was another wrestler that night. Chang definitely has a more aggressive style, continually going after the opponent and eventually winning by a pin. The four year wrestling veteran trained so hard that, “it looks like they’re the one under performing.”

Adrian Villicana also came out with a win that night not by a pin, but by points. You can score points for your match by escaping when your opponent has on the mat (1PT), taking your opponent on to the mat (2PT), when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent (2PT), or when your opponent commits an illegal action such as stalling or an illegal hold. At the end of 3 rounds and no pin, Villicana had more points, winning the match.

Closing out the night was David Cortez, a sophomore who competed in the heavyweight class. Using your weight to your advantage in wrestling is a key factor to pinning your opponent because you can easily weigh your opponent down. Cortez won that night by pin and even though he won the match he states he was, “impatient,” and, “nervous.”

Altogether, Poly varsity boys won the night and hope to do the same in the upcoming matches, meets, and tournaments upcoming this spring semester.

  • Jackrabbits Level Lady Lancers of Lakewood

The Poly vs. Lakewood girls volleyball  game took place on

September 12, 2018 in the big gym. Tons of people turned out to the game. It was a highly anticipated game against Poly’s own rival.

According to multiple players this game was way more intense compared to the Jordan game. The team chemistry improved a lot and helped them strive through the game.

The first round of the game poly and lakewood were going back and forth returning one point to point to each other. A very close first round but of course poly won the first round. The second round was sort of the same as the first. They both were exchanging points one by one but lakewood began to get a lead by four so it started to get more intense.

But at the last seconds poly had lost the second round. The third round the seats started to become more crowded and more people from both sides were cheering each of their teams on.

Poly had won the third round by four points. The biggest gap we had all game so the crowd was ecstatic. The rest of the rounds were the same were the same each of the teams only winning by no more than three.

But in the final round it got way more intense. More intense then it has been the entire game because both sides were even and this was the making point or the breaking point of the game. Both teams were neck and neck the entire time.

Then poly started to fall behind a little and lakewood had a small lead. When lakewood was five points away from winning poly began to start coming back. Then one final hit decided the fate of the game. And poly won!

  • Football: Not The Lancer’s Knight

The Jackrabbits football team had a solid performance against the Lakewood Lancers on October 18, coming out on top, 39-0. This game was especially meaningful for the seniors on the team as it was Senior Night. Before the game, each senior ran down the middle of the field to the open arms of their parents and coaches.

After the pre-game handshakes between the teams, it was time for business.

Poly scored on their second possession of the game, with a touchdown pass from senior John “JuJu” Smith to senior receiver Christian Pabico, who dove into the end zone.

The Jackrabbits’ offense was just getting started, as three minutes later, senior quarterback Tai Tiedemann threw a 43-yard pass to senior receiver Richard Mindoro on a quarterback scramble. The Jackrabbits went for a two-point conversion, completing it with a shovel pass from junior quarterback Josh Love to junior running back James Brooks.

The Jackrabbits scored just 15 seconds later starting with junior defensive back Iman “Biggie” Marshall getting an interception on the very next play. The Poly offense scored in one play, with a touchdown pass from Love to Pabico.

Wide receivers were the main scorers on the night; Pabico, Smith, and Mindoro were frequent targets for the quarterbacks.

Poly scored once more early in the second quarter, this time from Tiedemann to Pabico, his third on the night.

“This is the best night for receiving,” said Pabico.

The Jackrabbits entered the second half, up 33-0.

For the last score of the game, Tiedemann threw a short pass to junior tight end Gabe “Big Gabe” Rivera, who had no problem running it in.

The defense was on point, forcing six sacks on the Lancer quarterbacks. Senior defensive lineman Rodney “Bama” Shorter summed up Poly’s defense: “Fantastic. Terrific. Awesome. Tremendous. Spectacular.”

Smith also showed off his impressive hurdling skills, completely leaping over Lakewood’s Jarod Stevens. In the end, Poly won 39-0.

Not only was this game Senior Night, but also this game was part of the Great American Rivalries series. Pabico won the award for Most Valuable Player, for scoring a total of three touchdowns, all in the first half of the game

After the bye week, Poly will have an away against the Millikan Rams tomorrow.  Lastly, they will play the Wilson Bruins next Friday, November 8th before heading into post-season play.
